For years, my now fiancé and I have been avid lovers of sake. We’ve been members of SakeOne in Forest Grove, OR for as long as we’ve been together. <3
He’s been suggesting we move our subscription to another place in Portland, which is less “corporate” and has a wider variety of sake selection. (if you don’t know him, he likes supporting small businesses as much as he can \^o^/ )
I said I would only agree to move the subscription if I went and tried it, and liked it… So he took me out for a date.
At Sunflower Sake, the snacks are top notch! Highly recommend. Tell the person working the bar what kind of sake you like, and they will match you with a fun tasting. The people and sake there are above average and I look forward to getting our first subscription.
Tantanmen is a creamy, traditionally spicy, sesame flavored type of ramen. Traditional ingredients include bokchoy, green onions, ground pork which has been flavored deeply with spices, garlic, ginger, and onion, and lastly, a soft boiled egg.
In my dish I replaced the ground pork with ground turkey, and the bokchoy with steamed cabbage as that was what I had on hand. I also added a squeeze of chili oil on top!
I made this at home, after getting inspired by one of my favorite youtubers Hanako's Kitchen . She lives in Japan and makes bentos for her husband weekly. Her captions are all in english and her quaint humor and simply fun videos make it fun to watch. Their new cat is adorable as well. Check her out when you get a chance! <3
The dish turned out wonderfully and I will definitely make it again! It was super quick to come together on a Friday night after work :)
Thank you, Justin, for helping put together a remembrance for Niki, who passed away last month.
And thank you to my sister-in-law who had a gift created for in remembrance of Niki too. That was very heartfelt and a beautiful gift.
This meant so much to me. <3
We visited one of our favorite restaurants in town. Tan Tan Delicatessen is a local Vietnamese restaurant. One of my favorite dishes is called "Mi Xao Ca Chua" which according to their website is: Stir-fried egg noodles with your choice of protein in tangy tomato sauce with veggies and onions.
I need to figure out how to make this at home... because its delicious! The fresh onions and cilantro on top with fresh ground pepper. The melty tomatoes cooked into a delightful sauce. The heads of broccoli which soak up the tangy sauce.
We eat there often, so look forward to more photos of their delicious dishes. If you are ever in Portland, make sure to travel to the west side (you can get there by max and a short walk!) and try Tan Tan.
You won't regret it!
I defrosted some salmon(from Costco). I'm a bit OCD about the scales so I spent a little time scraping the backs of the fillets. I like the scales all cleaned off because I enjoy eating the skin on the salmon. I know some people can't stand the skin - and thats okay. To each their own!
I lightly salted the salmon and then rubbed dijon mustard on the top only. I spread panko (i almost ran out!) on top of the mustard. After placing it on the baking tray, I sprayed it with an olive oil spray. I baked it until I could smell it in the oven (and may have overcooked it a tad~). It turned out really tasty! I added a seasoning on top after it came out of the oven called Aosa Ko. It is similar to Aonori, but less fragrant and powerful. If you want to try seaweed but have a hard time trying new things this seasoning might be a good place to start for you!
The salmon rests on a bed of trader joes roasted corn mixed with peas.
On the left: Veggie Pancakes
All you need is shredded veggies, flour, water(and sometimes add an egg in there!). Fry it on the stove like you would a regular pancake. I add a little flavor in the way of chicken stock to the pancake batter. Salt, pepper, and a tablespoon of garlic powder help keep it savory. Resting on a bed of my home-grown red lettuce.
Avoiding rice this week, for no particular reason, we added potstickers instead for that little OOMPH. Korean vegetable potstickers FTW.
Enjoy your lunches this week!

My parents rescued a bichon frise a couple months ago. His name is Bo! He's absolutely adorable. He is older than they originally thought- perhaps 14? But still so puppy-like!
Luckily for me, they asked me to watch him while they went on vacation this week.
With the loss of my own pup last month, babysitting Bo has been a healing time for me so far.
Unfortunately, Bo had a bit of a rough time before coming to live with my parents. He's got some separation anxiety and wants to be with you all the time!
I had a leftover toy from when my own pup passed; and so this is a photo of Bo with his "new toy"! He is *just* learning to play. It is the cutest thing!
